Summary
As a Software Development Lead on the OnVUE team, you will provide technical leadership for one or more product development squads supporting Pearson VUE's flagship remote proctoring platform. You will be responsible for leading the design and implementation of scalable software solutions, mentoring engineers, driving technical excellence, and ensuring successful delivery of strategic initiatives.
In addition to being a strong individual contributor, you will provide day-to-day technical leadership, facilitate architectural discussions, conduct design and code reviews, establish engineering standards, and guide the team's adoption of modern development practices. You will partner closely with Product Managers, Business Analysts, Product Architects, Quality Engineering, and DevOps teams to deliver secure, reliable, and highly scalable solutions. This role requires strong expertise in both front-end and back-end development, cloud-native architectures, and modern software engineering practices.

OnVUE is Pearson VUE's remote proctoring platform, enabling candidates to take high-stakes exams securely from anywhere in the world. The platform provides real-time video monitoring, advanced security capabilities, and interactive proctoring experiences to support millions of test takers globally. The product remains a strategic investment area for Pearson VUE and continues to grow in scale, functionality, and complexity.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
Lead and mentor software engineers across one or more development squads.
Provide technical direction and coaching to team members.
Establish and promote engineering best practices.
Drive code quality, maintainability, security, and performance standards.
Lead technical design sessions and architectural discussions.
Collaborate with Product Architects to ensure alignment with platform strategy.
Software Development
Design, develop, and deliver enterprise-scale software solutions.
Develop new features and technical enhancements across the OnVUE platform.
Create scalable and maintainable system designs.
Participate in complex troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
Conduct design reviews, code reviews, and technical assessments.
Support release planning and deployment activities.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner with Product Managers and Business Analysts to refine requirements.
Work closely with Quality Engineering to improve quality and automation.
Coordinate with DevOps and Infrastructure teams on cloud-native solutions.
Contribute to roadmap planning and technical estimation activities.
Support platform modernization and technical debt reduction initiatives.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrated technical leadership with a strong focus on engineering quality and continuous improvement.
Strong software design and system architecture skills.
Experience with cloud-based DevOps workflows and CI/CD environments.
Experience building highly available and scalable enterprise applications.
Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
Experience mentoring developers and building high-performing engineering teams.
Familiarity with large language models (LLMs) and machine learning concepts is preferred.
Experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, Claude, GitHub Copilot, or comparable platforms is preferred.
Experience with application security, observability, and performance engineering is preferred.
Experience supporting accessibility compliance initiatives and WCAG standards is preferred.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
8+ years of professional software development experience.
3+ years of technical leadership or lead developer experience.
Strong experience designing and implementing distributed systems.
Experience leading Agile engineering teams.
Experience working within cloud-native environments.
Compensation at Pearson is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and specific location. As required by the California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York State, New York City, Vermont, Washington State, and Washington DC laws, the pay range for this position is as follows:
The full-time salary range is between $120,000 - $135,000.
