Job Description and Duties

The Information Technology Specialist I plays a critical role in supporting the infrastructure that powers the Financial Information System for California (FI$Cal), providing technical leadership and expertise in server administration. This position is responsible for the evaluation, design, implementation, configuration, maintenance, and lifecycle management of enterprise server hardware, operating systems, virtualization platforms, storage solutions, cloud services, and related technologies.

Working collaboratively with internal teams, vendors, and business partners, the incumbent provides advanced technical expertise to support complex infrastructure, resolve technical issues, implement innovative solutions, and ensure the security, reliability, and availability of FI$Cal’s technology environment. From planning and implementation through ongoing operations and continuous improvement, this position plays a vital role in maintaining a stable, resilient, and high-performing enterprise infrastructure that supports FI$Cal’s statewide mission.

Effective July 1, 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) which reduces an employee’s monthly salary in exchange for leave credits. Employees appointed to this classification will have their monthly salary reduced and will accrue hours of PLP 2025 on the first day of each pay period in accordance with the applicable bargaining contract. Working Conditions

At FI$Cal, we are compliant with the Governors executive order, N22-025, requiring staff to be in office 4 or more days per week. In-office attendance is mandatory on designated days and is subject to change. Our office is located at 2000 Evergreen Street, Sacramento, CA. Candidates residing outside of California are welcome to interview, but proof of California residency is required before appointment. Please note, relocation and commute expenses are the responsibility of the employee.

This position requires prolonged sitting in an office-setting environment with the use of a personal computer. Employees must demonstrate a commitment to maintain a working environment free from discrimination and sexual harassment. All staff must maintain regular, consistent, predictable attendance, maintain good working habits and adhere to all policies and procedures.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) a Background Investigation be cleared prior to being hired.

  • This position requires the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and may require excess hours to be worked.

  • The incumbent provides back-up, as necessary, to ensure continuity of departmental activities.
  • This position may require the use of a hand-cart to transport documents and/or equipment over 20 pounds.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Working experience with systems administration.
  • Working experience administering virtual environments.
  • Working experience administering Microsoft Active Directory.
  • Working experience administering Microsoft Windows Server.
  • Experience developing and maintaining technical documentation, including policies, procedures, and system documentation.
  • Experience providing technical help desk support and troubleshooting.
